How to Use Plastic Milk Containers for Watering the Garden

Use old plastic milk jugs as watering cans for the garden. Cardboard cartons don't last as long as plastic jugs. Additionally, using old milk jugs in this way reuses the plastic material while saving the money you might have spent to purchase a watering can.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Empty plastic milk jugs with caps
  • Hammer
  • Long nail
  • Water
  1. Step 1

Rinse out the milk jugs thoroughly.

  2. Step 2

Set the nail against the plastic and gently hammer six to eight holes around the top. Making holes in the top of the jug slows the water pour rate. Plants can be over-watered or flattened if water rushes out of the large hole too fast--these small holes prevent this from happening.

  3. Step 3

Fill the jug almost full with water. Screw the cap on.

  4. Step 4

Turn the jug upside down over the garden. The water drains out of the holes. Remove the cap when the jug is almost empty to release the rest of the water.
