How to Add a New Application to the iPhone

The iPhone offers capabilities to download and add new applications, with categories including games, news, education, business and sports. More than 50,000 applications range in cost from free to hundreds of dollars, although most applications are under $5. Adding a new application to the iPhone takes just a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Create an iTunes account by clicking on "Store," then "Create New Account." Follow the on-screen instructions and enter a valid credit card number to purchase applications.

    • 2

Ensure that the iPhone is connected to the Internet. You can check your iPhone's Internet connection status by looking in the top left-hand corner of the screen, which will display a Wi-Fi symbol if you are connected to a local wireless network or will display "E," "O" or "3G" if you are connected to your service provider's cellular Internet connection. If there is no symbol in that corner, your iPhone is not connected to the Internet, and you cannot add new applications at this time.

    • 3

Click on "App Store." This will open up Apple's application store on your phone.

    • 4

Browse for applications by using the categories at the top of the screen (New, What's Hot, Genius) or click "Categories" at the bottom of the screen to narrow your search to a specific category. In the alternative, you can click "Search" at the bottom of the screen and enter keywords to narrow down the applications.

    • 5

Click on an application's name to get more information. On this screen, you can also view screenshots of the application and read user-submitted reviews.

    • 6

Click on the blue rectangle at the top right-hand corner of the screen. This rectangle will display the cost of the application, or it will say "FREE" if the application is available at no charge. When you click on the rectangle, its color will change to green and it will say "INSTALL." Click on it again to confirm.

    • 7

Enter your iTunes password when prompted. The application will now begin downloading to your iPhone. The application icon will appear on your iPhone with a status bar letting you know the progress of the download. When the status bar disappears, the application has been successfully added to your iPhone.

Repeat this process for all other iPhone applications you would like to add.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is possible to browse iPhone applications from a home computer by opening iTunes and selecting "iTunes Store" from the column on the left. You can purchase applications, but they will not be downloaded to your iPhone unless you connect your phone to your computer using a USB cord and sync your phone using iTunes. Applications occasionally require new updates to be downloaded and installed. You can install updates for free. Complete the process directly from your iPhone by clicking on "App Store," then "Updates," then "Update All."

  • A small number of applications require a monthly fee to be billed from your phone service provider. Before you download an application, be certain to read all information provided on the application's main page.
