Select a style of shadowbox. If you want to display several items or a collection, then you might consider a shelf with multiple inserts or niches. This shelf may stay open, or you can use one with a simple backing and a glass front. A floating shelf can serve as a shadowbox if you frame it with tabletop columns and a lightweight top. Another option involves repurposing a desk drawer and nailing it to the wall to use as a simple shadowbox. You might also opt for lightweight wooden shadowboxes that come with glass panels and removable backs so that you can decorate the interior.

Paint or finish your shadowbox. Apply a light coat of antique whitewash or a couple coats of eggshell, pale yellow or pale blue for a neutral backdrop. If you have your composition in mind, go with a bolder thematic look on the interior or exterior of the shadowbox. Keep in mind, however, that the simpler your backdrop, the more the contents of the shadowbox will stand out. Use a swatch of fabric, wallpaper or even gift wrap to adorn the inside of your shadowbox. Apply it with craft glue, working from the center outward and smoothing it carefully to avoid bubbles and wrinkles.

Add three-dimensional elements that require gluing to the exterior or interior of the shadowbox. Use craft glue or, for heavier items, a hot glue gun to adhere river stones, glitter, sequins, cloth flowers, lace, doilies, collage cut-outs, ribbons, beads, shells, sea glass or photographs. Take advantage of the height and width of the shadowbox by gluing pieces at different levels. Glue hanging items from the top of the shadowbox, and allow them to cascade downward. Try a curtain of lace as a backdrop, or frame the inside of the shadowbox with chains of plastic flowers and leaves glued together.

4
Accessorize your shadowbox. A collection speaks for itself, but try different items as centerpieces. If you have a family heirloom, favorite art postcard, historic photograph, souvenir from world travels or treasured artwork, make it the focal point. Place a small tabletop easel inside the shadowbox to heighten the central object, or use a small box covered in fabric or gift wrap as a pedestal. Try different groupings of objects, organizing them by color, theme, country of origin or material.

Tips & Warnings
Emphasize your shadowbox by framing it with wall sconces.
Make sure your hanging hardware can support the weight of the shadowbox. If you add heavy items, use thicker gauge wire or support the shadowbox with brackets.
