1
Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet, and move the dryer away from the wall so you can access the dryer duct.
-
2
Use a screwdriver to loosen the clamp on the dryer duct where it connects to the outside dryer vent. Pull the duct work away from the dryer vent.
-
-
3
Go outside, and remove the screws that secure the outside vent to the wall if any are remaining.
-
4
Use a putty knife to break any remaining seal between the dryer vent and outside wall, and pull the dryer vent out.
-
5
Inspect the wall area where the dryer vent attaches. You must make new holes to attach the dryer vent because the existing ones are worn. Or you could make the existing holes bigger, and use larger attaching bolts.
-
6
Patch the existing holes in your outside wall where the dryer vent was secured. Place some silicone caulk into holes on vinyl siding to prevent rain from getting behind the siding.
-
7
Use the putty knife to scrape away any residual caulk from the mounting lip of the dryer vent. This will ensure that the vent mounts evenly on the wall.
-
8
Drill new holes on the mounting lip of the dryer vent using an appropriate size bit for your securing screws or bolts. Ideally drill holes at least 1 inch away from the existing mounting holes.
-
9
Insert the dryer vent into the opening in the wall, and press it firmly against the wall. Mark the new holes with a pencil on the wall. Remove the dryer vent, and set it out of the way.
-
10
Use an appropriate size bit and drill pilot holes for the dryer vent. If you are using wall anchors, make sure to drill holes large enough to tap the anchors into the wall.
-
11
Insert the dryer vent into the vent hole, and secure it with your attaching screws.
-
12
Use a caulk gun, and apply silicone caulk around the perimeter of the dryer vent where it meets the wall. Make sure to also place some caulk into the previous holes on the dryer vent to prevent moisture and rain from getting behind the vent.
-
13
Go back inside the laundry room, and reattach the duct work to the outside dryer vent. Tighten the securing clamp down.
-
14
Plug the dryer back into the wall outlet, and push the dryer back into its permanent location.
