How to Check Status on Amended Individual Income Tax Refund

When you discover an error on a tax return that has been filed, you can file an amended return within two years of the date you paid the tax, or within three years of the original filing date. Wouldn't it be wonderful to discover that filing an amended tax return resulted in a refund? The IRS has a time limit to process the amended return. This time limit depends on the tax form that was amended. You can check on the status of the amended return at any time.

  1. Step 1

    The IRS checks each return that is submitted. If the IRS finds a math error, a notice of correction is mailed to the taxpayer. The IRS usually includes this amount with the original refund check. If the refund check arrives, and the amount is not included, you can call IRS assistance at 800-829-1040 to check on the status of the refund.

  2. Step 2

    When you file an amended 1040 tax return, it can take up to 12 weeks for the IRS to process this. To check on the status of the return, call IRS customer service at 800-829-1040.

  3. Step 3

    The IRS rules of processing are different for a corporation's 1120 amended return. The IRS is not required to process these returns within 90 days. However, if the return is not processed within six months, the corporation has the right to sue the IRS.

    To check on the status of the amended 1120 return, call 800-829-4933 or 800-829-1040.

  4. Step 4

    When a partnership files an amended 1065 return, it is necessary to issue an amended K-1 to each partner. The partners use the K-1 to file an amended 1040 return. To check on the status of the 1065 return, and the subsequent amended individuals return, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 or 800-829-4933.

  5. Step 5

    To check on the status of an amended state tax return, contact your state taxing authority. To access state information, use the link http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=99021,00.html. When choosing your state, you are directed to the state website.

  • Allow one week after filing before contacting the IRS on the status of the amended return.
