How to Glue a Fabric Sachet

How to Glue a Fabric Sachet thumbnail
A pleasantly scented sachet can make a welcome gift.

Pretty "no-sew" sachets can be used to add fragrance to a linen closet or dresser drawer. They can also be displayed on a bathroom soap dish or on a dresser mirror. Add a loop to the tops and hang them from closet doors. Created from small pieces of lightweight printed fabric or wide organza ribbons, sachets make lovely gifts during the holidays, favors or for almost any occasion. Enhance them with embellishments such as beads, tiny artificial flowers or shiny buttons.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the fabric on a work table and fold in half, right side in. Align the edges together. Press the crease with a hot iron on an ironing board.

    • 2

Using a ruler and marker, and starting with the selvedge side, mark off a six-inch square. Cut the two squares out with scissors.

    • 3

Lay one piece on a work table, right side up. With a hot glue gun, apply a line of glue along three sides close to the edges. While the glue is still warm, press the second fabric square on top of of the first piece, lined up with the two sides. Press down along the edges with the handle of the glue gun.

    • 4

Place the two pieces on the ironing board and run the hot iron over them. Let the fabric cool.

    • 5

Turn the sachet right side out. With scissors, poke inside to make the corners sharp. Press the sachet flat with a hot iron again, tucking in 1/2-inch of the fabric on the open side, making a neat crease.

    • 6

Fold the 10-inch piece of satin ribbon in half to make a loop. Place the ends inside one end of the sachet (between fabrics) so the loop hangs out of the sachet and the ends are inside. Hot glue the ribbon ends to the fabric to secure the loop. Fill the sachet with lavender. Apply hot glue to the inside flaps. Seal the sachet closed by pressing them together for a neat finish. This will also hide the ends of the ribbon loop that are now inside the sachet. Embellish the sachet as desired.

Tips & Warnings

  • Beautiful fabric in expired fabric sample books can be obtained for free at home decor and drapery shops. Use leftover pieces of pretty fabric for making sachets.

  • If children are working on this project, an adult should take full responsibility for handling the hot glue gun and iron.
