How to Find the Status of a Social Security Claim

When applying for Social Security benefits, the wait time between applying and learning whether or not you will receive benefits can be filled with anxiety. In order to give people more of a sense of being in the know, Social Security administrators introduced a way to check your claim status.

• Social Security number

Instructions

1. Visit the Social Security administration website at www.socialsecurity.gov.

2. Click the link "Check the Status of Your Application," in the sidebar on the left side.

3. Enter your Social Security number in the two fields shown, then click "Next."

4. Follow the prompts that come up on the screen until you reach your application status. If there is an error, it may be best to call about your claim at either [phone] or [phone].
