How to Open SRT File Downloads
When you deal with video files downloaded from the Internet, you may find a file ending with the extension ".srt." These files contain the subtitles that go along with the video, either in another language or closed captioning for the hearing impaired. While it is not hard to open the subtitle file on its own, you may need to acquire a special video file to get the subtitles to play along with the video file.

1
Double click on an .srt file, and it may open in either a video player, a text editor or a subtitle editing program. Which program you use to open it will depend on what you want to do with the subtitles.
-
2
Place the movie and .srt files in the same folder and open the movie with an .srt-capable video player if you just want to play the subtitles with the movie they go with. In one of the program's menus, you will find an option to enable subtitles, and the program should automatically recognize the .srt file. VLC, a media player developed by VideoLAN, is a recommended option, and can be downloaded for free for most operating systems. In VLC, you can find the subtitle options under the Video menu.

3
Open the .srt file in either a basic text editor or a purpose-built subtitle editing program if you want to edit the subtitles. While text editors may be able to open the file, they are unlikely to be able to interpret the information contained inside very well, and may be unable to save changes to the file. If you are trying to edit the subtitles to a movie or make your own subtitles, download a special piece of software to do so. These programs are available for most systems, but may vary greatly in their operation.
