    1. Organizing Your Horse Barn

      • 1

Make a sketch of how you want the barn to look. This sketch can be something as simple as a drawing on a piece of paper, or as elaborate as a blueprint created with your favorite drawing program. Sketching the design ahead of time will give you something to work from once you get out to the barn.

Set down enough wooden pallets to cover the floor in the section of the barn where you plan to store your hay and your bags of horse feed. Hay will quickly soak up moisture if stored directly on the ground, and that moisture could cause significant mold to accumulate. Mold can be quite toxic to horses, so it is critical to keep your hay dry no matter what the weather may bring. Lay down the pallets and use those pallets as a platform to store your hay and bags of feed.

Hang up racks around the perimeter of the barn, avoiding those areas the horse is able to reach. These racks will be used to hang bridles, halters, lead ropes and other essential pieces of horse equipment. For areas where racks cannot fit, you can simply screw hooks into the wood and use those to hang your equipment.

If you plan to store your saddles in the barn, attach a saddle rack to an open area on one of the walls of the barn. Choose an area that will be easy to get to and where you will be able to move around easily. If you plan to saddle your horse in the stall, make sure there is an unobstructed path between your saddle rack and the stall door.
