A Secret Santa gift exchange is a popular workplace activity during the holiday season. It’s a great way to save money when gift shopping for co-workers, since you only need to buy something for your assigned recipient. A Secret Santa exchange also provides some excitement as well as a nice break from the stress that tends to accompany the holidays. Here are some tips for organizing an exchange in your office or workplace.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A list of participants
  1. Step 1

Announce the idea of a Secret Santa exchange, and collect the names of everyone who wants to participate. You can even organize the entire event for free online (see Resources section).

  2. Step 2

Decide on and publicize the rules, such as how many days the exchange will run, the minimum and maximum amount of money to be spent on each gift, and whether or not the secret santas will reveal their real identities at the end.

  3. Step 3

Purchase or make the gifts for your intended recipient. Some inexpensive ideas include candy or snacks that you know he or she likes, a candle, a picture frame, a mug and coffee or tea samples, bath salts or soaps, decorative stationery, and homemade cookies or cake. It’s also nice to put in some extra effort wrapping the gifts.

  4. Step 4

Deliver the gift or gifts to your recipient. This is the fun part and can be accomplished by enlisting the help of another co-worker if necessary. Leave the gifts in your recipient’s mailbox or on his or her desk when the person is not around. You could even throw suspicion off of yourself by hand delivering the items and announcing that they’re from the person’s Secret Santa. They might not realize that it’s you until you reveal your identity later! Some businesses organize a holiday party or potluck event, where the gifts are collected and distributed. You can make the gift exchange as low-key or as festive as you wish!

Tips & Warnings
  • Be creative with your gifts. Make the exchange fun by providing clues along the way. For instance, if your name starts with the letter C, then give gifts that all start with the letter C and see if your recipient figures out your identity.
  • Keep a master list of participants so that, if someone doesn’t receive their gift, you can follow up with that person’s Secret Santa.
