How to Tether Your BlackBerry Cell Phone and Use it to Connect Your Laptop to the Internet
Your BlackBerry can operate as a modem to your laptop. The process is simple, and you can tether the two devices to get access to the Internet almost anywhere. If your laptop's internal network card is on the fritz, hook up your BlackBerry to serve as a modem.

Go to BlackBerry's "Support" page on BlackBerry.com. Click on "Downloads." Click "Download BlackBerry Desktop Software" to download the latest version of the program onto your laptop. As of September 2011, the latest version is 6.1.

Connect your BlackBerry to your laptop using the phone's USB cable. Open your BlackBerry Desktop Software and click "Tools." Select "Mobile Internet Settings," and click on your cell phone service provider's profile. Most of the fields will already be filled in the profile for you. Contact your cell phone service provider and speak to an IT representative. Have the IT representative give you any information that is not filled in by default in your Mobile Internet Settings profile. Complete the profile and click "OK."

Leave your BlackBerry connected to your laptop. From your BlackBerry Desktop Software, click the "Tools" menu and select "Start Mobile Internet." Click "Connect" to use your BlackBerry as your laptop's modem.

Tips & Warnings
If your cell phone service provider is not listed by default in your Mobile Internet Settings, create a new profile and ask the IT representative for all of the information requested in the new profile's fields.
Make sure you know how many GB you have in your plan and keep track of how much you use so you don't have to pay for overage.
