Things You'll Need:
- 2 c. chopped tomatoes
- 1/4 c. water
- 1 T. chopped onions
- 1/2 t. salt
- 1/8 t. pepper
- 1/4 t. cumin
- 1/4 t. sugar
-
Step 1
Make sure to choose the freshest, ripest tomatoes you can find. The bigger the better. Turn the stove on to medium. Chop off the stems on the tomatoes. Slice them into fourths. In a large size pan combine the chopped tomatoes and add the water until tomatoes are soft.
-
Step 2
Mash the tomatoes thoroughly with a potato masher. Add to the pan the onions, salt, pepper, cumin and sugar. Stir all these ingredients together well until blended.
-
Step 3
Serve the sauce warm always. It doesn't taste as well cold. You can pour this sauce over tamales, eggs to make rancheros huevos, tacos, enchiladas, or on pasta. It goes together well with a number of Mexican dishes. Also to save money you can even use this recipe to replace canned pureed tomatoes. It's much better for you minus all the added salt and preservatives.
