"It's the experience that counts" is the new "It's the thought that counts." So, how do you create an experience with your holiday gifts? Start by thinking about the people you'd like to spend time with--and then dream up ways to have fun together--then top it off with a token to inspire the interaction. Here's what I mean.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Craft supplies
  • Appointment at pottery making studio
  • Books, blanket, slippers
  • Digital camera
  • Scavenger hunt list
  • Mini projector, popcorn, DVD
  1. Step 1

Make gifts together. Kids' handmade tokens of affection are still Number One on the list of smile-inducing gifts. Turn the gift-making experience into a holiday treat by inviting cousins and your child's friends over to make cards with your craft supplies, or treat them to a session at a make-your-own-pottery store like Color Me Mine to make gifts for grandparents, teachers, Dad and anyone else in their life.

  2. Step 2

Plan story time. Give a few books to your kids along with a cozy blanket and slippers and a promise to read together three days a week.

  3. Step 3

Create a family holiday photo. We all have our moments of taking brilliant photographs, so why not harness the greatness long enough to give the gift of a family holiday photo? The gift involves organizing the shoot, taking a fabulous shot and uploading the shot to a photo sharing site.

  4. Step 4

Organize a scavenger hunt. Give a camera to the kids in the family along with a list of items to hunt down and take photos of together. Once the list is complete, an additional gift is waiting for the family children. Items on the list can include a photo of you volunteering at a soup kitchen, a photo of you caroling at a retirement home, things along those lines.

  5. Step 5

Take classes together or meet up afterward to hear all about the experience. Classes can include dance, art, photography, anything fun for the family.

  6. Step 6

Plan Movie Night. A mini projector will project a movie up to 60 inches on a wall, sheet or other hard surface. Present it along with an iconic movie like "Elf" and a promise to get together for monthly Movie and Popcorn Night.
