Having high blood pressure is a common problem for Americans. Even though millions are affected by it, there are ways to control it. Below are some quick tips to help maintain blood pressure more effectively.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Blood Pressure Monitor
  1. Step 1

First, watch your weight. If you are obese (about 20 percent above the ideal weight for your height and bone structure) try to lose as much weight as you can. However, it does not have to be done in a short period of time. Making small progress can go a long way.

  2. Step 2

Try to cut down on salt content. Studies show that there is a connection between high blood pressure and salt intake. To lower salt intake, cut down on salt to about five grams a day.

  3. Step 3

The amount of alcohol consumed may also increase blood pressure. One or two cans of beer may not be harmful, but anything more may raise hypertension.

  4. Step 4

Light exercises like walking, swimming, and bike riding are helpful in relieving blood pressure. These activities cause the blood vessels to open up, eventually causing the pressure to drop. Don't do any exercises that may be too stressful. Consult your doctor first.

  5. Step 5

Lastly, be a happy person. Controlling your emotions are important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. When you have the time, relax and read a book, watch a movie, or do anything else that takes stress away.
