In this article you will learn some tips and tricks on how to effectively house break your new puppy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crate
  • Puppy treats
  • Time
  • Energy
  1. Step 1

Make a schedule to fit you and your new furry friend. Keep in mind that puppies need to go potty every 1 - 2 hours, and will feel the need to go after play time as well. Make sure that you keep track of feeding times; reason being is that puppies will need to go potty almost immediatly following meal time. It is best to not to allow your dog free access to food for this reason.

  2. Step 2

Associate desired commands with actions. For example, when you pick the puppy up to go outside, say something at the same time such as "Lets go outside". as the puppy is doing it's buisness say something to the effect of "Go potty". That way, the puppy will eventually learn to go outside, and potty on command which could save you time in the future.

  3. Step 3

Puppy treats are one of the most effective methods to encourage your dog's desired behavior. Everytime the puppy relives it's self outside, be sure to give him/her a treat. Other times to give your puppy treats would be comming when you call his or her name, and crate time.

  4. Step 4

Purchasing a crate is a neccesity, as crating will cut down on night time accidents, and accidents that can occur when you are not at home. The puppy may not like it at first, but will warm up to it later on down the road.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ignore bad behavior ( do not give any responce; negative or positive) , but make sure to praise good behavior
  • Puppies are just like children! Keep all dangerous things out of their reach.
  • As tempting as it is, never invite the puppy on your furnature! You may think its cute now, but perhaps not when they are full grown.
