You love your pet bird right? And you want to make sure that what you feed is nourishing and healthy. So, what do you do? Make your own bird food and treats, that's what!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons dry non fat milk
  • 1 teaspoon dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon butter or bacon grease (gathered from an earlier breakfast)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon Iodized salt
  • 1 and 1/2 cup of whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup flax seed flour
  • 1 teaspoon peanut butter
  • 2 eggs
  1. Step 1

stir together the eggs, water, milk, yeast, and peanut butter. Add bacon grease or butter, honey, salt, and 1/2 cup whole wheat flour. Beat vigorously for two minutes, add remaining flour and knead for about 2 minutes let dough rest for ten minutes.

  2. Step 2

then knead another ten minutes sprinkling flour as needed to keep from sticking to your hands. Grease your bowl with a thin layer of canola oil and put your dough in turn it over so that it all gets covered with a coat of oil. Place dough cover and place in a draft free warm place (I use the inside of my oven, the oven should be off) let proof until double in size.

  3. Step 3

Now punch dough down until it's back to it's original size. Cut into six equal sizes and roll into loaves. Place on lightly greased sheet pan and cover loosely with plastic wrap or towel and put back in warm place to re rise. when dough doubles in size it is ready to bake.

  4. Step 4

remove pan from the oven and preheat oven to 325 degrees. when oven reaches temperature bake bread until golden brown about 15 minutes. Cool pulse one loaf at a time in your food processor and feed to your birds. Remove any uneaten food before end of day.

Tips & Warnings
  • These loaves will freeze well and stay fresh for a very long time. After crumbling them they will last in your refrigerator for one week.
  • Do not feed these foods exclusively. For your birds need complete nutrition and fruits and vegetables must be offered.
