Write a Death Announcement

One of the sad duties that comes with the death of a loved one is writing a death announcement. A death announcement, also known as a death notice, is usually one paragraph that gives the deceased's vital information and details of the funeral service. Families often pay to have them published in a newspaper. An obituary, by contrast, is a full article usually researched and written by a publication's reporter. Follow some customary steps when writing a death notice.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with the deceased's name, age, date and location of death. Include any nicknames or maiden names to avoid confusion. Including the cause of death is optional.

    • 2

Include a brief outline of the deceased's accomplishments, such as where he worked or volunteered.

    • 3

Detail the funeral arrangements. List the date, time and location of the service. Add information about the burial, if necessary.

    • 4

List the deceased's survivors. Spouses, children and their spouses, parents, siblings, nieces, nephews and grandchildren are customarily included.

    • 5

Specify where donations can be made in the deceased's name, if necessary. Include the organization's full name and street address.

Tips & Warnings

  • Contact the publication where you want the notice published to find out about costs and length limits, if applicable.
