How to Pass the Essay Portion of the GED

The GED exam gives a person who did not finish high school an opportunity to obtain an equivalent to a diploma. This accomplishment helps the student get a job and pursue other opportunities that would not be available otherwise. The writing portion of the GED requires an expository essay to be completed within 45 minutes. Passing the essay portion of the GED requires the ability to focus a thought and expand upon it.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand the rules of the exam before you walk into the testing center. You will have 45 minutes to complete the essay, which must cover an assigned topic. It must be informative and clear and provide interesting information. The essay is graded on a four-point scale with a minimum passing grade of two.

    • 2

Avoid the temptation to just start writing once you see your topic. Forty-five minutes is plenty of time to complete the assignment. Plan your essay, and use a short outline if necessary. Jot down a few notes to remind you of the direction you plan to take in your essay.

    • 3

Know what the graders look for. Grammar mistakes are not crucial, as long as they do not distract the reader from your point. The most important thing is to have a focus for your essay, to write clearly and to stay on track.
