Step 1
When looking at recognition, you need to understand both the internal and external benefits for the employee being recognized. Internal benefits include feelings of pride and satisfaction an individual or team may get from a job well-done and the personal motivators they may have for continuing to do well.
-
Step 2
External benefits would relate to what can be seen, touched, or used by the individual employee or team. Both internals and external types of recognition are used to reinforce a particular behavior in the employees receiving them. Both also may provide a short-term benefit to you as the manager by increasing the level of motivation or good behaviors from employees.

Step 3
Both internal and external recognition must be promptly given to employees with a precise and principled acknowledgment of why they are receiving the recognition. For you to do this, you need to understand the 3 P's of recognition as being:
- Precise by giving individual or group detailed information on relevancy of what was done, as well as acknowledging when, where, why, and how it was done.
- Principled by showing sincere and honest acknowledgement of an individual or group that supports organizational beliefs and values through their commitment and accomplishments.
- Prompt by giving well-timed acknowledgement as soon as possible after the event has occurred or action has been completed.
