Step 1
Write the text. The text on your door hanger should be brief. Write the main message first, such as "Grand Opening," "Labor Day Sale" or "New Member Special!" The main message should reflect the reason you are going to the expense of having business door hangers created. Next, extend an offer, which is the particular reason for the recipient to buy your product or service. This might be in a form such as a discounted price or the offer of a free item. Finally, write a call to action asking the recipient to take a particular action and provide your business's contact information, such as physical address, website address or telephone number, depending on your business's particular arrangement.
-
Step 2
Choose the graphics. If your door-hanger message is about a particular product or service, include images of the product or service. Images may be photographs, clip art or line art drawings. If the message is not about a particular product, but about a grand opening, sales promotion or other topic, consider including your company's logo as a graphic element. Do not include graphics that are not directly related to the door-hanger message.

Step 3
Choose the colors and fonts. For door hangers, more color is generally better. Primary colors are preferable to secondary colors and bold colors are preferable to pastels. The goal of a door hanger is to catch the attention of the recipient so that the recipient will read the message, so bright colors are appropriate. Similarly, the door-hanger message should be easy to read, so fonts in large type sizes are preferable to fonts in smaller sizes.

Step 4
Decide on a layout for the text and graphics. The layout for door hangers necessarily takes into account the hole at the top of the hanger where the hanger is placed on the recipient's doorknob. Office software such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Publisher provide templates for door hangers. However, it can be useful to hire a graphic designer to lay out the hanger after you have assembled all the content you want to have printed on the door hanger.

Step 5
Select a printing services provider. Different printing companies may require that you submit your door hanger design in a particular file format; if you have hired a graphic designer to help with the final layout, the designer should be able to recommend a printing company. All printing companies will provide information about the file formats they accept. Once you submit the final layout to the printing company, the design process is complete.
