How to Use a TI-84 Calculator for Elementary Statistics

The TI-84 Plus and TI-84 Silver Edition are both excellent choices for elementary statistics. With a built-in USB, large screen and multitude of functions, the TI-series calculators make it easy to visualize concepts and perform statistical analysis with ease.

Instructions

      Find a mean for a given data set by pressing the Stat, then Edit keys. Enter the numbers in a list. Hit Stat, Calc, 1. Press Enter twice. The mean is the top value, represented by Xbar.

      Find the standard deviation by pressing the 2nd key and then 0. Select Ln and use the arrow down key to scroll to stdDev(. Press Enter. According to Megan Mocko, statistics lecturer at the University of Florida, your finished statement should look like this (make sure to include the curly brackets):

      stdDev({1,1,1,4,7,7,7})

      Press Enter.

      Find the binomial distribution by pressing the following keys in order: 2nd, Vars. Press the down arrow until you reach A:binompdf(. Press Enter. Enter n, p, x in order so that your completed statement looks like this:

      binompdf(1,2,3)

      Press Enter.

      Find the normal distribution by pressing 2nd, Vars, 2. Enter x1, x2, mean and standard deviation so that your input looks like this:

      normalcdf(20, 25, 20, 3)

      Press Enter.

      Calculate a confidence interval with a known standard deviation and n > 30 by pressing the following keys in order: Stat, right arrow to Tests, 7. Enter the following, in order, followed by a press of the down arrow: standard deviation, mean, sample size, confidence level.
