How to Play Age of Empires on the Internet
In the past, Ensemble Studios and Microsoft's Zone supported playing Age of Empires. Those options no longer exist, but Game Ranger makes playing internet-based multiplayer games like Age of Empires simple. You will need to update your copy of Age of Empires, then download and install Game Ranger. After that, you're only a few clicks away from joining or hosting a game.

In order to play against other Age of Empires owners, you will need to update your version to the latest patch. Go to the official Microsoft Age of Empires site to download v1.0c. Make sure you download the appropriate file for your language. Execute the file once you've downloaded it and follow all prompts to install.

Go to the Game Ranger web site and click to download the software. The initial file downloaded is small (a little over 100k). Double-click the gameranger.exe file to execute and to download the latest update. Next, read and accept the user terms and complete all required fields to register.

Game Ranger will send you an activation email. Click on the link in the email to activate your account.

Now that you've activated your account, you can join or host multi-player Age of Empire games. Game Ranger alphabetizes the games on its service, so you should see Age of Empires games at the top. Further, Game Ranger lists the type of game and the number of players allowed in the game.

Once you've found a suitable game, click on the Join button. Game Ranger should detect your installed game and send you to a game room. Once the players are ready, click on Join and launch will launch Age of Empires for you.

If you'd rather host a game, click on the Host button. Choose Age of Empires and decide on the number of players. Fill in any additional information you'd like and click the OK button
This will open a game room where you can wait for players to join and can chat. Click on "Start" when you are ready to proceed.

Tips & Warnings
On Game Ranger, you can obtain more information about a game host by selecting it and right-clicking on "Show Info." Show Info will show you the location of the game host, along with some other details. From the right-click menu, you can also contact the game host. If you have technical issues, make use of Game Ranger's Support area, which includes forums. You must be signed on to Game Ranger in order to access the forums.
