How to Make Gift Boxes & Bags
Gifts are expressions of gratitude or celebration. While the gift should be thoughtful, the presentation of the gift also can reflect the thought that's put into the gift. Creating custom gift boxes and bags can enhance the presentation and the appreciation.
Things You'll Need
- Chipboard
- Markers or other decorating materials
- Painter's tape
- Craft knife
- Fabric
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Decorative string

Custom Gift Box

Measure the gift you would like to wrap. Be sure to measure all dimensions: height, length, depth and width.

Decorate a piece of chipboard to be used for the customized box. Markers, rubber stamps and paint are good options.

Turn the decorated chipboard over and draw the base measurement in a square. For example, if the gift is 3 inches by 3 inches, draw a 3-inch square on the backside of the chipboard.

Draw a square adjacent to each side of the first square; the sides of these squares should equal the height of the gift. When you're finished, it should look like a plus sign. For example, if the gift is 3 inches tall and the base is 3 inches wide, there would be one 3-inch-by-3-inch square in the center, with a 3-inch-by-3-inch square extending from every side of the center square, creating a plus sign.

Draw another square box the same size as the base adjacent to one end of the plus sign to create the lid. It now looks more like a cross.

Cut out the cross-like shape using a sharp craft knife. Score the drawn lines that connect the squares together for easy folding. This includes between the base, the side wall pieces and the lid.

Fold the walls to form a box. Along the edges of the box, use a colored tape, such as painter's tape, to hold the box together. Tape the inside of the box as well to reinforce the joints.

Fold the lid of the box down, and tape it closed once the gift is inside the box.
Custom Gift Bag

Measure the height and circumference of the gift you would like to wrap.

Select the fabric you would like to use to create the gift bag. Think about the thickness and durability of the fabric in relation to the item you will be wrapping.

Cut a piece of fabric that is twice the height of the item, plus an additional 8 inches, and the circumference of the item, plus an additional 2 inches.

Fold the fabric in half, with the back side of the fabric facing out. Sew along the outer edges of the fabric, creating a bag.

Turn the fabric right side out and fold down 1 1/2 inches of the top edge of fabric toward the inside of the bag. Sew a straight line around the top, 1 inch from the edge, to secure the hem of the fabric and create a clean edge for the bag. Insert the gift into the bag and tie a decorative string around the top of the bag to secure it.
