How to Reset the Check Engine Light in a Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi vehicles built after 1996 were designed with a system known as On-Board Diagnostics (OBD II). On-board diagnostics uses electrical sensors to monitor the operation of your vehicle's emissions components. When one of these components fails, it causes the check engine light on the dash to illuminate, and stores a trouble code in the engine's computer. The check engine light can be cleared using a diagnostic code scanner.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the diagnostic code scanner into the vehicle's diagnostic port beneath the dash.

    • 2

Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the "run" position. Do not turn the engine on.

    • 3

Use the scanner to read the trouble codes. Wait until the scanner is completely finished.

    • 4

Press the "delete codes" or a similar button on the scanner to remove the codes.

    • 5

Disconnect the scanner from the vehicle.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not own a code scanner and do not wish to purchase one, many auto parts stores will read and clear the trouble codes at no cost.

  • Clearing the code alone will not solve the underlying problem which caused the check engine light to illuminate. Ignoring the check engine light can lead to serious vehicle damage.
