Many GPS products include Bluetooth , an open wireless protocol that allows near instant transmission of data between devices at high rates of exchange. Some Garmin devices, such as the GPSMAP 296, are intended for use on motorcycles and airplanes, where the use of wireless Bluetooth headsets are extremely convenient. Occasionally interference from magnetic or electronic fields will cause devices to lose their sync, requiring you to restart the headset.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Garmin Bluetooth GPS
  • Bluetooth Headset
  1. Step 1

Check to make sure both the GPS and the headset are powered on. Garmin devices have a manual on switch that can be identified by the circle with an I in the middle of it, usually on the side of the device.

  2. Step 2

Bring the headset and GPS close together, usually within three to four feet.

  3. Step 3

Hold down the sync button on your headset for four to five seconds to reset it.

  4. Step 4

Once the red or blue light stops flashing, press the sync button one more time. Do not hold it down this time.

  5. Step 5

If the lights go solid and stop flashing, listen to your headset to see if it is now synchronized.

  6. Step 6

Repeat steps 2 through 5 if synchronization fails. Sometimes it takes more then one try to get it right.

Tips & Warnings
  • Garmin GPS devices use an uncoded signal to communicate with Bluetooth devices. This means that there are no numbers to input and it will automatically default to the proper channel (11).
  • Make sure there are no other Bluetooth signals nearby, such as from a computer or PlayStation 3. These additional signals may confuse the headset as to which device it is to synchronize with.
