How to Apply Weed & Feed
Weed and feed is a fertilizer for grass that contains herbicides, specifically "weedkillers" for dandelions and crabgrass. Not all weed and feed mixes will kill both, so check the package before purchasing. The purpose of weed and feed is to strengthen and feed your grass and eliminate lawn weeds simultaneously.
There are two types of weed and feed: Pre-emergent varieties prevent weed growth. They must be applied before weeds begin to grow and will not kill existing weeds. Post-emergent varieties are designed to kill existing weeds on contact, but will not prevent future weeds.

Apply pre-emergent weed and feed in mid-March, before the grass regenerates. This will feed the grass as it grows and prevent weeds from growing.

Apply post-emergent weed and feed once in late May, when the grass is regenerated and weeds have begun to grow. This will kill existing weeds.

Spray water over the entire yard. Make sure everything is wet but not soaked. This will help the fertilizer to stick to your yard.

Pour out three pounds of fertilizer per square yard of lawn. Pour out one bag at a time, sprinkling the weed and feed evenly over the area.

Rake any piles of weed and feed smooth with long, smooth strokes. Make sure the fertilizer is spread in one, even layer.

Avoid watering your lawn for two or three days after applying weed and feed.

Tips & Warnings
Mow your lawn one week before applying post-emergent weed and feed. That way, your lawn will not be too long or too short for the fertilizer to be effective.
Do not allow pets to eat grass after weed and feed application. Wear gardening gloves during application and do not get granules in your eyes.
