How to Convert Audio Files to WAV or AIFF

Converting audio files, specifically MP3s, into WAV or AIFF can be done in almost any audio editor. The problem is, most programs cannot convert multiple MP3s into a different audio format all in one step. Users are usually forced to convert tracks one MP3 at a time, in what becomes a tedious process. Fortunately, iTunes 9 solves the batch conversion issue by allowing users to convert an unlimited amount of tracks into WAV files in a matter of clicks.

Instructions

  1. Converting MP3s to WAV files in iTunes

    • 1

      Open iTunes.

    • 2

Choose the track you want to convert to a WAV file. If you want to convert multiple tracks at once, it may be easier to create a new playlist and drag all of the files you want to convert into the playlist. Creating a new playlist is especially handy if you're converting MP3s or AAC files from different albums.

    • 3

Control-click (MAC) or right-click (PC) the tracks you want to convert and select "Create WAV Version." This initiates the conversion process.

    • 4

Search for the newly converted WAV files in your music library. Usually they will be underneath the original MP3 or AAC file.

Tips & Warnings

  • The difference between WAV and AIFF is proprietary (WAV was developed for Windows, AIFF for Apple), not auditory, so there is no difference in sound quality.

  • If you still want to convert MP3 or WAV files into AIFF, you need a blank CD. Create a playlist and fill it with the tracks you want to convert to AIFF. Burn the contents of the playlist. After it is done burning, click "Import Settings...". Select "AIFF Encoder" on the drop-down menu and press OK to apply your new settings. Click "Import CD" and the CD contents will appear in your music library in AIFF format.
