How to Make Your Own Wax Tarts
Wax tarts are small discs of scented wax. They're called tarts because their shape resembles dessert "tarts" commonly made with a small "tart" shell or base and fruit or cream filling. Wax tarts use a liquid potpourri burner to scent a room. They're easier to maintain than candles because they require no wick trimming or open flame to disperse fragrance. Scented wax potpourri tarts make good personal, homemade gifts for friends and family. You can make your own wax tarts at home, which will allow you the choice of scent strength and color.

1
Fill the bottom pan of the double boiler up to the inside line that the top pan rests on. Place 1 pound of wax flakes into the top pan of your double boiler, and turn the heat on the stove-top to medium low.
-
2
Melt the wax completely, and slowly pour your fragrance oil into the pan. Use a metal spoon to mix the oil into the wax, and keep slowly adding oil until you are satisfied with the strength of the scent.

3
Add your liquid dye slowly, until the color is slightly darker than what you like (the wax will lighten as it cools). Stir the color thoroughly into the wax with your metal spoon.
-
4
Add 1 tsp of vybar to the pan. This will prevent fragrance oil from seeping out of the wax when it has finished cooling and setting up.
-
5
Spray the muffin tins with a non-stick cooking spray, and pour the wax into the tins. The wax should fill about a third of each tin.
-
6
Let the tin sit until the wax is completely cool and hardened. It may take three to four hours, depending on the temperature of your room. Remove the wax tarts from your muffin tin, and use them in a potpourri burner to scent any room.

Tips & Warnings
Use caution when pouring molten wax. Wax will adhere to skin, and continue to burn until it is removed.
