Sunless tanning---or applying a fake tan---has gained popularity in recent years as people try to escape the harmful, aging rays of the sun, and cancer-causing UV lights of tanning beds. Sunless tanning is a great option if you wish to preserve your skin while still sporting a healthy glow. However, a great fake tan takes preparation. Avoid that orange look seen on so many unfortunate celebrities with these easy tips.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Exfoliator
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunless tanning lotion
  • Small sponge paint roller
  • Nail brush

    Steps to perfect fake tan

  1. Step 1

Scrub your entire body with exfoliator, focusing particularly on your knees and elbows. Use a loofa or a beaded body scrub for best results.

  2. Step 2

Apply moisturizer to knees, elbows and armpits to avoid extra absorption of tanner.

  3. Step 3

Apply a thin, even layer of sunless tanning lotion all over body. Use the small sponge paint roller to apply lotion to back.

  4. Step 4

Wash hands thoroughly, using a nail brush to remove any trace of tanning lotion from underneath fingernails, around nail beds and on cuticles. Do this within five minutes of application.

  5. Step 5

Allow lotion to dry for at least 30 minutes before getting dressed or going to bed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a specially formulated sunless tanning lotion for your face and neck as ones made for the body can sink into fine lines, making them darker. Apply one thin layer at a time, gradually building up color to ensure an even tan. Don't forget spots like the tops of your feet, backs of hands, ankles, wrists, back of your neck and ears. Use hydrogen peroxide to lighten dark spots. Apply with a cotton ball and rinse off afterwards.
  • Do not shave for several hours prior to sunless tanning. The lotion can sting freshly shaved skin. Always apply sunscreen when going outdoors. Your sunless tan does not provide sun protection, even if the bottle says it has sunscreen in it. Do not reapply sunless tanning lotion for at least three hours after initial application. It takes this long for color to develop fully. Do not shower for at least six hours after application.
