How to Choose an Exhaust Header
Exhaust headers are made of tubular metal rather than cast from metal like a manifold. Their main benefit is better airflow through the engine. The faster and more efficiently air is evacuated from the engine, the more power it makes. Though choosing the right header for your car might sound like an easy task, there are few steps to take that will make the process even easier.

1
Find out what type of exhaust system is already on your car. If the exhaust from the catalytic converter back is already an aftermarket system, you should get the same brand of header, since they will be optimized to work together for maximum performance and it will probably be easier to install. If you are still using your stock exhaust, choose a header based on what you expect to get out of it.

2
Decide where you want the most power to be in the engine's powerband. Generally speaking, longer pips on the header will result in more bottom-end power, while shorter header pipes work better at higher RPMs. If you have a high-revving car like a Porsche or a V-TEC Honda, shorter header pipes will favor this type of motor. If you have a V8, then use longer header pipes.

Choose a look that complements your engine bay. If you already have parts that are chromed or polished, choose headers that have a similar finish, like stainless steel or chrome headers. If you want a more purposeful look, use headers that have been ceramic coated for a look that's ready for the racetrack.

4
Decide how the car will be used after the headers are installed. If you are building a show car, then it's probably safe to choose a header with a very slick finish, like stainless steel. If, on the other hand, you are building a race car, it's better to go with a ceramic-coated header or even a header that has been wrapped in heat-resistant tape.

5
Find out if your vehicle needs to be emissions-compliant. Cars that are older than 30 years or so are generally exempt from emissions testing, though this varies from state to state. If your car needs to stay emissions-legal, choose headers that can accept smog equipment like oxygen sensors. Check your local laws before choosing a header. If your car is old enough to be smog-exempt or it is used for off-road use only like racing, then get the best header you can afford.
