How to Prevent an iPod From Syncing

The iPod is a bestselling media device designed by Apple, and includes the iPod Classic, iPod Touch, iPod Nano and the iPod Shuffle. All the iPod models sync with Apple's iTunes software to transfer media such as songs or movies between the computer and the portable device. The iPod cannot be used while syncing, which can be a hassle for those who only want to charge their device or view its contents. Prevent an iPod from syncing by changing your iTunes and iPod settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch the iTunes software, available for free from the official Apple website (see Resources). Double-click it from within your "Applications" folder on a Mac computer, or by selecting it from your "Start" menu on a Windows PC.

    • 2

Connect the iPod to your computer using its original USB cable. Slip the wide, thin end of the cable into the bottom of your iPod device. Plug the other end into an open port on your computer. For best results, use a powered port directly on your computer rather than an extension port such as those found on your keyboard.

    • 3

Disable iTunes' auto-launch feature. This will stop all automated syncing, which typically occurs as soon as you connect the iPod to your PC or Mac. Click the iPod's name under "Devices" in the left-hand column of the iTunes window. A screen displaying your iPod's information will appear. Uncheck the check box next to "Open iTunes when this iPod is attached."

    • 4

Prevent the syncing of select portions of your iTunes media library. In the iPod's screen in iTunes, click the check box next to "Manually manage music and videos." Press the "Apply" button in the lower right-hand corner of iTunes.

    • 5

Click the "Music" tab. Select the playlists, artists or genres that you wish to sync. Deselect the items that you want to stop syncing. Prevent the syncing of other media, such as photos or movies, by clicking the appropriate tab. Press the "Sync" button in the lower right-hand corner of the software. Your iPod will now sync only the items you've selected.

    • 6

Stop the iPod from syncing if you connect it with another computer. After plugging the device into the new computer, iTunes will display a warning that asks if you want to sync the iPod with the new iTunes media library. Press "No" to disable syncing for that specific instance.
