How to Uninstall Windows XP Professional

After installing Windows XP professional, it is possible--and easy--to install it if you no longer want it. Once it is uninstalled, the computer will run the previous operating system that was installed prior to the installation of Windows XP Professional. The user should back up any important files prior to completing the installation. Microsoft's Help & Support Center provides useful troubleshooting information to assist users with the Windows XP Professional product in general.

Instructions

    • 1

Restart your computer and allow the computer to begin in safe mode. Safe mode can be accessed by pressing the F8 key at regular intervals (every few seconds) while the computer is restarting. Now the computer will automatically begin in safe mode. This will allow you to safely uninstall the Windows XP Professional operating system. Log into the computer using your credentials.

    • 2

Click on the "Start" button in the bottom left-hand bottom corner of the computer. Choose "Control Panel", then "Add/Remove Programs." This opens a dialog box that displays all of the programs that are installed on your PC.

    • 3

Locate the Windows XP program in the list of programs and choose "uninstall Windows XP." You will see a message that states "Are you sure you want to uninstall Windows XP and restore your previous operating system?" Choose "Yes" when asked to verify the removal of Windows XP.

    • 4

Choose "Next" to continue and allow the operating system to be removed from the computer. After the installation is complete, the computer will restart. The previous operating system that was present before the install of the Windows XP operating system will begin. Your previous files are still in place since uninstalling the Windows XP operating system does not remove any of your files. Access your files and verify that they are functioning properly.

Tips & Warnings

  • Uninstalling the Windows XP operating system may cause some of your previously installed programs to not function properly. Some of these programs may have to be reinstalled.
