How to Optimize Your Torrent Client Speeds

For music lovers and movie buffs, Bittorrent programs provide an easy way to download large media files quickly and easily. Torrent files package enormous amounts of data in single downloads that upload through special clients. However, these programs can slow down your computer and perform poorly without the proper settings.

Instructions

  1. Choose the Right Port

    • 1

Test your bittorrent client's port at CanYouSeeMe.org. According to Tech Support Alert, if the site says your port is open, skip to "Adjusting Internal Settings". If your port is closed, move on to Step 2.

    • 2

Choose an open port. Most ports in the 49152-65534 range will avoid ISP blocks and conflicts with other applications.

    • 3

Avoid ports in the 6881-6999 range. Most ISPs have flagged these ports for bittorrent use and blocked them permanently.

    Forward Your Port

    • 4

Check your computer to see if you have a firewall or a router that can block incoming connections. If you have a firewall, go to its settings page and allow TCP and UDP in both directions.

    • 5

Decide whether to use UPnP or a Static IP if you have a router. A static IP is safer, as UPnP has a security issue which allows any program to access your computer without your consent.

    • 6

If you choose the first option, enable UPnP in your bittorrent client and router. Mac users should enable NAT-PMP.

    • 7

If you choose the second option, use the Static IP guide at Port Forward to set up a Static IP. Then set permission for the bittorrent client's port, which you should have set to allow TCP and UDP connections.

Adjust the Settings in Your Bittorrent Client

    • 8

Cap the upload in your bittorrent client to eighty percent of your overall capacity. If you set it any higher, interference in outgoing communications will slow your download speeds.

    • 9

Take an online speed test. These can be found at many websites and require you to shut down all other internet activity before you begin testing.

    • 10

Enter your speed statistics into your bittorrent client. This will optimize your client to work best with your computer's hardware. Remember that a setting of "0" in the download box means that you're allowing unlimited downloads.
