Ubuntu is a user friendly version of the Linux operating system designed for people who want complete control over all aspects of their computer. Ubuntu is an open source program, which means that it is completely free and 100% legal to download. The installation file is quite large, weighing in at 698MB. Luckily this is the only file that you will need to download to install Ubuntu using your AT&T DSL Internet connection.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • CD-RW Drive
  • Writable CD
  • Burning software
  1. Step 1

Go to Ubuntu.com. This is the main Ubuntu web page and is the location where you can find the operation system's installation file.

  2. Step 2

Click on the icon that reads "Download" from the left side of the Ubuntu homepage. This will take you to the page where you can begin the download of the installation file.

  3. Step 3

Select a server location to download the file from the drop down menu. Select a location that is close to where you live for a faster download time. When finished, click the "Begin Download" button. Save the file to a directory on your hard drive that you'll have easy access to. On an AT&T DSL internet connection the entire download should take no more than 20 to 25 minutes.

  4. Step 4

Burn the installation file to a blank CD. The installation file is a .ISO file, which means that it is an archived CD image file. This single file contains dozens of files necessary to complete the installation of Ubuntu. You'll need a program like Nero Burning ROM that is capable of burning .ISO files to CDs.

  5. Step 5

Restart your computer with the Ubuntu installation CD you've just made in the drive. Your computer will automatically boot from the installation CD and bring up the instructions for installing the operating system. Simply follow the instructions laid out onscreen to complete the installation.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can install Ubuntu in one of two ways--you can completely overwrite your current operating system and just use Ubuntu, or install it on your hard drive alongside your current OS. If you choose the former you will lose all files saved to your current operating system. If you choose the latter, you must also choose which operating system you want to load when you start up your computer.
