Instructions

    • 1

Fill the water kettle and heat the water to almost boiling. Pour the hot water into the large bowl and add the tea bags to the water. Steep the water and tea bags for 5 minutes. Remove the tea bags and discard. If using coffee, pour 4 cups of hot coffee into the large bowl.

    • 2

Place the muslin fabric into the hot tea or coffee. Use the wooden spoon to make sure that the fabric is completely submerged in the tea or coffee. Allow the fabric to soak for 1 hour.

    • 3

Check the fabric several times during the soaking period to assess the progress. Proceed to step 4 if you are satisfied with the color before the hour elapses.

    • 4

Remove the fabric when you like the degree of stain. Wring out the fabric well with your hands to remove as much excess moisture as possible.

    • 5

Hang the fabric from the clothesline to dry completely.

    • 6

Iron the muslin to remove wrinkles and make it smooth and crisp before using it for your project.

Tips & Warnings

  • Another way to stain muslin fabric is to fill a spray bottle with tea or coffee. Protect your work surface with several layers of newspaper and place the muslin fabric on the newspaper. Spray the muslin fabric with the tea or coffee for a splattered effect. Hang the muslin fabric on the clothesline to dry.
