How to Store Guacamole

Save

Guacamole is a thick dip made from avocados and a few other simple ingredients, depending on what recipe you use. It can be consumed with tortilla chips or added to other foods, such as tacos, burritos or even hamburgers. As with avocados, take special care when storing guacamole to prevent it from turning brown due to exposure to air.

Things You'll Need

  • Lemon juice
  • Transfer the guacamole from the serving bowl to an air-tight container that has a lid. Press the pit of the avocado into the center of the dip to help prevent browning.

  • Scrape off any guacamole that may be clinging to the sides of the container, and add it to the rest of the dip. Smooth the top of the guacamole with a spoon or knife so that it is as flat as possible.

  • Squeeze lemon juice over the top of the smoothed guacamole to keep it from browning.

  • Place a layer of plastic wrap directly on top of the guacamole. Gently press out as much air from under the plastic wrap as possible, and try to seal the plastic wrap to the sides of the container as best you can. The plastic wrap probably won't stick to the insides of the bowl, which is fine---you just want to keep as much air out as possible.

  • Seal the lid on the top of your air-tight container. The type of container that you press the lid in the center to seal is the best kind to use, because doing so creates a vacuum.

  • Store the air-tight container in the fridge for up to a week. When you are ready to serve the dip again, remove the lid, plastic wrap and pit. Place the container in the microwave for a minute or two to warm the guacamole. The top of the dip may be brown, but it won't taste funny, and you can just scoop this off quickly before serving.

Tips & Warnings

  • Store guacamole as soon as you are done consuming it to prevent it from browning as much as possible.
