1
Remove the door from the hinges of the house be unscrewing the supports from the door frame.
-
2
Lay the door flat onto newspaper. Place it on a table to save yourself from constantly bending over. If you have an open garage, paint it there. If not, place it under a tarp or tent to protect it from rain. Close the garage and tarp when you are not working on the door to keep animals and water from ruining the paint job.

3
Lightly coat the door with a layer of wood primer made for outdoor wood. Your paint brush should be a stiff 3-inch bristle brush. This type allows for ample control while giving you enough support to paint over the typically rough wood of the log cabin door. This protects the wood from rain and other natural elements. Watch the edges of the door and the sides for excess paint build-up. Wipe the edge primer off before it can gather, and dry with a paper towel.
-
4
Allow the primer to dry. This will take several hours (actual time will vary depending on the kind of primer, how thick you apply it, and the humidity in the air).
-
5
Lightly add the paint onto the door. Thinner coats dry faster and go on more smoothly. Do not stop in the middle of of a coat to avoid streaks. You can use a roller for the larger areas; however, it may leave a slight texture from the roller material. Applying smooth brush strokes keeps the paint smooth and avoids brush lines.

Wait for the paint to dry, then repeat the light paint coat two more times. Allow the paint to dry over night before attaching it back to the door frame.
