8mm projectors have not been made for many years, and so those still in use have suffered from neglect and lack of care. This can make them work erratically when turned on and can damage the film that is being run through them. Cleaning and adjusting a 8mm projector can make it run more smoothly and efficiently so that 8mm movies can be viewed safely. The work needed will only take a few minutes and can translate into hours of trouble-free playback.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Place the unplugged 8mm projector on a clean surface with plenty of light. Remove the screws that hold the metal casing to the projector. Place the screws aside. Remove the metal casing that covers the bulb and place it aside on the clean cloth.

  2. Step 2

Take the camel's hair brush and blow dust off of the bulb. Blow dust from around the bulb. Pick up the metal casing. Take the lint-free cloth and gently wipe the edges of the metal casing.

Replace the metal casing to its original position covering the bulb. Replace the screws to their original position in the metal casing.

  3. Step 3

Gently remove the film gate from its position on the 8mm projector. Place it aside on the clean cloth. Blow dust from the open space where the film gate was using the camel's hair brush. Pick up the film gate by the edges. Blow dust off of the film gate using the camel's hair brush. Gently wipe the edges of the film gate using the lint-free cloth. Take a cotton swab moistened with rubbing alcohol and gently wipe around the edges of the film gate.

Replace the film gate to its original position on the 8mm projector.

  4. Step 4

Take the lint-free cloth and gently wipe around the edges of the two hubs of the 8mm projector: the hub that holds the 8mm movie when it is to be viewed and the other hub that holds the take-up reel. Take a cotton swab moistened with rubbing alcohol and gently go around the two hubs where they attach to the metal arms that hold them.

  5. Step 5

Take the clean cloth and gently wipe the entire body of the 8mm projector. Plug the projector in for power. Turn on the projector and place an 8mm movie on the holding reel. Thread the 8mm movie through the film gate and onto the take-up reel. Turn on the projector's bulb and start the movie playing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that the work space where the 8mm projector is being cleaned is free of dirt and debris. Wearing a hair net will keep stray hairs from falling into the film gate or onto the bulb while it is exposed.
  • Never touch the bulb or bulb casing of an 8mm projector after it has been used. The bulb and casing get very hot and so can burn flesh. Wait until both bulb and casing have totally cooled down before approaching either of them.
