With regular use and exposure to weather conditions, the belt that drives your riding lawn mower can become dried out and brittle or break in the middle of mowing your lawn. To keep your mower belt running when you need it, inspect the belt routinely for any signs of wear or damage. No matter which brand of riding mower you have, the belt is attached from the drive pulley to the mower deck the same way and you can replace it yourself in about an hour.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pliers
  1. Step 1

Remove the grass catcher from the back of your riding lawn mower to replace the belt by lifting it up and away from the mower.

  2. Step 2

Detach the plastic grass tube that goes inside the grass catcher by removing the two cotter pins that hold it on with a pair of pliers then lifting the tunnel off the mower.

  3. Step 3

Drop the mowing deck of your lawn mower down so that it is resting on the ground, then pull the release pins out on each side.

  4. Step 4

Push the mower deck forward and lift the pivot rod in the front to release the mowing deck from the lawn mower.

  5. Step 5

Locate the drive pulley underneath the lawn mower and remove the belt from the pulley by hand. Move the height adjustment lever up to the top position.

  6. Step 6

Slide the mower deck out from under the lawn mower and set it out of the way, then examine how the belt is looped around the pulleys and attached to the mower deck.

  7. Step 7

Remove the old belt from the mower deck by taking it off the pulleys by hand, then attach the new lawn mower belt, wrapping it around the pulleys and positioning it exactly as the old belt came off.

  8. Step 8

Slide the mower deck back under the lawn mower and reconnect the front rod to the deck, then lower the height adjustment lever all the way down. Snap the back pins into position on the mower deck.

  9. Step 9

Reattach the new mower belt to the drive pulley underneath the lawn mower and lift the height adjustment lever back to the top position.

  10. Step 10

Attach the plastic tunnel to the back of the riding lawn mower with the cotter pins then place the grass catcher back on the mower.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never attempt to make any adjustments to the lawn mower or the belt while the mower engine is running.
