Marathon sod allows you to completely re-sod your lawn with lush, full swatches of grass, without having to worry about whether you planted the seed properly. Marathon sod takes deep root; five times deeper than blue grass. Marathon sod can also withstand hot climates. Preparing your lawn for your sod, and taking care of it in the first weeks, is a process which must be done properly for best results, but is not a difficult process, as long as you pay proper attention to the sod.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Spray on herbicide
  • Sod cutter
  • Rototiller
  • Dirt rake
  • Fertilizer
  • Yard roller
  • Utility knife
  • Sprinkler
  1. Step 1

Remove your old lawn before the sod arrives by spraying the entire lawn with herbicide. A weedkiller will work as the herbicide. Use a sod cutter to cut up the lawn, once the grass is dead and dry.

  2. Step 2

Rototill your lawn to 6 inches deep, and rake with a dirt rake to toss the soil.

  3. Step 3

Spread fertilizer across the entire lawn.

  4. Step 4

Flatten the dirt down using the yard roller.

  5. Step 5

Lay the sod in a staggered arrangement, like the pattern used when laying bricks, to prevent your yard from having a grid of seams.

  6. Step 6

Use the utility knife to cut the sod to fit any curves or hills in the yard. Make sure all pieces of sod lay flat.

  7. Step 7

Roll the yard again. This will help the new sod to help it take hold with the soil.

  8. Step 8

Soak the entire yard immediately after installation.

  9. Step 9

Water the lawn three times a day, in the morning, midday and early in the afternoon for the first week. Stop the midday watering starting in the second week, and stop the afternoon watering after the third week.
