How to Remove About Blank Adware
When you use a web browser to surf the Internet, your computer can be exposed to potentially malicious programs such as adware. There are several different adware programs that change your web browser's homepage to the "About: Blank" screen and then create a series of pop-up ads. You can use the Spybot Search and Destroy program, or a similar anti-adware utility, to remove any adware software installed on your computer that has changed your web browser's homepage settings.

Follow the link in the Resources section to the Spybot website if you don't already have an anti-adware utility installed on your computer. Download and install the Spybot software.

Restart the computer. Press the "F2" key when the computer manufacturer's logo loads on the screen.

Press the down arrow key to highlight "Safe Mode." Press "Enter." Wait for the operating system to finish loading in Safe Mode and then open Spybot Search and Destroy.

Click "Search For Updates." Click "Continue" and then "Download." Wait for the updates to finish installing and then click "Check For Problems."

Choose "Remove Selected Problems" when Spybot finishes running its scan. Click "Immunize" to prevent any further adware from being installed while you browse the Internet.

Restart your computer. Open your web browser. Click "Tools" and then "Options." Navigate to the "Main" tab. Type in the new homepage you want to use in the "Homepage" field.
Lavasoft AdAware

Follow the link in the Resources section to the Lavasoft website if you don't already have an anti-adware utility installed on your computer. Download and install the Lavasoft AdAware software.

Restart the computer and press "F2" when the manufacturer's logo appears on the screen. Highlight "Safe Mode" and press Enter.

Open the Lavasoft program. Click "Update Manager" and wait for the updates to finish installing.

Select "Scan System." Wait for the scan to finish and click "Remove Problems." Restart your computer.

Open your web browser and click "Tools." Select "Options" and then click "Main." Type in the new homepage you want to use in the "Homepage" text field.

Tips & Warnings
Different computer brands may use different keys to access the Safe Mode menu. If "F2" does not work you can also try "F8," "F10," or "Delete." Check the manual that came with your system if you can't find the correct key. Update your anti-adware program and run a full scan at least once each week to prevent any further infections. You may need to choose slightly different options for changing your home page if you are using a web browser other than Mozilla Firefox. There are many different anti-adware programs available, however Spybot and Lavasoft AdAware are both free programs capable of removing any "About: Blank" adware.
Spybot Search and Destroy cannot be opened normally if you use the Windows Vista operating system. Instead you must right-click the desktop icon and select "Run as Administrator."
