How to Make a Mobile Website

Save

Websites created for mobile device should be designed differently than websites that are accessed by computer users. Whereas a regular website may have a lot of content such as images, text and special effects, a mobile website should be as simple as possible. By using less, your website will be considered "mobile friendly." As a result, you have a greater chance of visitors coming back to your site when they need quick information on the go.

  • Purchase a domain name for your mobile website. While you can choose a .com domain name if you desire, the .mobi extension specifically indicates that a website is for mobile users. To purchase a .com domain name, you can visit any domain name registrar, such as NetFirms.Com, GoDaddy.Com or Network Solutions. As of mid-2009, the domain name will cost you an average of $7.00 to $10.00 per year, depending upon the registrar. You will need to enter valid credit card information to purchase the domain name.

Keep in mind that not all domain name registrars allow you to register .mobi extensions. (See Resources.)

  • Go to a website, such as mobiSiteGalore, that will allow you to use their free online software to create a website that is friendly to mobile devices. You will need to sign up for a new user account in order to use the website. Log into your account after completing the sign-up process. (See Resources.)

  • Browse through the list of available templates to choose the template you would like to use on your mobile website. Customize the template by choosing your items such as color and font type.

  • Begin creating pages for your website. The pages should contain basic information that a mobile user would want to quickly find out about your site or product. For example, you can include a "Contact Us" page, "Products" or "Map." The text on your pages should be brief and to the point.

  • Insert images onto your mobile pages. Avoid using a lot of images on your pages, since using a lot of images is not considered "mobile friendly," in part because of the small screen.

  • Preview your mobile website to make sure it looks good. Edit it if needed. Once you are satisfied, select the option to "publish" your site.
