How to Open a U.S. Bank Account Online

U.S. Bank makes it easy to do all your banking online. You can pay bills, open a checking and savings account and request a loan through the online system. To open a U.S. Bank account online, you must meet U.S. Bank's browser requirements and security standards. You must consent not to withdraw your application after exiting the system and agree to receive regulatory disclosures electronically. The application process takes about 10 minutes and you'll learn of your approval within a few minutes.

      Go to http://tinyurl.com/ec8bc and select "U.S. Bank Checking" under "Checking Accounts" to open a checking account. You should be at least 18 years old, a legal resident of the U.S., and have a Social Security number and state identification card (such as a drivers license, state ID or military ID).

      Enter your ZIP code under "Getting Stated" for information that's specific to your region and click "Continue."

      Select your banking package, savings account and credit card.

      Choose free, elite, silver elite or student checking to open a checking account, or select standard, goal, money market or elite money market to open a savings account. You must be at least 55 years old to open a "Silver Elite Checking" account and younger than 25 years old to open a "Student Checking" account.

      Enter a promotion code if you have one and pick "Yes" if you'd like to open a joint account.

      Complete the section for the "USA Patriot Act," which protects against terrorism and money-laundering activities.

      Indicate whether you will use the account for business, if you will withdraw or deposit $5,000 or more (cash) at a time, if anyone other than you or immediate family members will make cash deposits into the account, if you plan to send/receive monthly wire transfers, and if you are a senior foreign political official, family member or a close associate.
