Permanent black hair color can be difficult to remove, should you decide that you want a change. Ideally, you would use temporary color when dying hair a dark and dramatic color such as black. However, if you're trying to lift color from a previous black dye-job, there are a few techniques that will help you achieve a lighter look.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Apply color lifter to dry hair. Instructions may vary depending on the brand. Read directions carefully before applying.

  2. Step 2

Wait the allotted amount of time (usually 30 to 45 minutes).

  3. Step 3

Rinse hair thoroughly with room temperature water until the water runs clear.

  4. Step 4

    Wash hair thoroughly with shampoo.

  5. Step 5

Condition using a deep conditioner or oil treatment.

  6. Step 1

Wait until hair is dry and judge whether it has been sufficiently lightened. If the hair color you've achieved is darker than the color you want to dye your hair, you must repeat the color lifting process.

  7. Step 2

Apply hair color to dry hair as directed on the box. Waiting a few days between lifting the color and applying the new color gives you hair a break from the harsh chemicals. Waiting also gives you an opportunity to rinse out any additional color that may left due to chemical residue.

  8. Step 3

Rinse hair with room temperature water until the water runs clear. This may take 15 to 20 minutes depending on how much color you used.

  9. Step 4

    Shampoo and deep condition.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lifting color will leave hair very dry. Once you've lifted and recolored, it is wise to invest in a deep conditioner and a hair serum. Avoiding hot hair styling tools will help your hair retain the conditioning treatment. If you have to repeat the lifting process, wait a few days between color lifts. Giving your hair a break is the best way to prevent excessive dryness.
  • Color lifter and hair color have harsh chemicals. Always test the products on a bit of your scalp before applying to the whole head. This will ensure that if there is an allergic reaction, it will be minimal.
