Converting a regular photo or picture file such as a JPEG image to a gif file is quick and simple. Clip art is usually saved as a GIF, and GIFs are useful and a necessary source if you want to create an animated GIF. Thumbnails are usually created with GIFs because of the small size of a gif file. You can search the internet for software that will convert the files for you, or you can use some free software courtesy of Microsoft.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows based PC
  1. Step 1

Open the folder that has the file you would like to convert. Then open your Microsoft Paint program.

  2. Step 2

If you have trouble locating the program, go to Start, then Programs, then Accessories on most Microsoft Windows based PCs.

  3. Step 3

Load your image into Paint, then go to File then Save As. Once you do this, a window will pop up asking you where you would like to save the file and as what type.

  4. Step 4

In the file type, select GIF from the drop down box. Then name the file and click the Save button.

  5. Step 5

Once you have saved the file, you can open it to make sure it is what you were looking for. Now you can use it for animations if you want to make an animated GIF. Animated GIF images are popular because they allow you to convey more of a message without embedding a video to a web page.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that when you save the file you do not save it in a random folder you do not remember the location of.
