Things You'll Need:
- corrugated cardboard, about 3" x 24"
- stapler
- newspaper
- 1/4 cup flour
- saucepan
- paint
- yarn, beads and other trims
-
Step 1
Ease the strip of corrugated cardboard into an oval shape and staple the ends together. Crumple up some newspaper and stuff it into the oval, up to the level of the cardboard. As you're designing the mask remember that if you wish to make it wearable you must make the oval ring large enough to fit around your face, and you will need to poke holes for your eyes and nose, and for an elastic band.
-
Step 2
Make the four and water paste. Mix 1/4 cup flour with 4 cups of water in a medium-sized saucepan. Bring to a boil on the stove, stirring until the mixture is smooth and the consistency of cream. Set aside to cool.
-
Step 3
Meanwhile, cut some newspaper into short strips. Save some whole sheets to crumple and twist into shapes to build the mask features. When the paste is cool enough to work with, paste down the strips and twists to make the mask's face. Overlap with your hands as you law them down, to avoid wrinkles and bumps.
-
Step 4
The entire mask should have four to five layers of strips. It's a good idea to put down two layers and let them dry before adding the next two. The final layer can be made with tissue paper or another thin paper, if you'd like.
-
Step 5
Remove the crumpled-up paper that is stuffed inside the oval. Let the mask dry for an additional few days, until there is no hint of moisture. After it is dry, you may use sand paper to rub away the rough edges, if you'd like. Paint the mask a rich brown to look like wood, or paint it any way you like. Add some extra touches, such as a tongue and matted hair made from yarn.
