Consider Traction Therapy. Traction therapy is designed to minimize your muscle spasms and decrease the pain of a herniated disk. Stretches are accomplished by using a traction machine with the assistance of a licensed physical therapist. The traction machine is used for up to 15 minutes, followed by a couple minutes of rest. This process is repeated a few times during the course of one session.

Check out Back Braces. According to the Mayo Clinic, back braces help regain mobility by keeping your body in good posture. The brace also reduces the amount of motion in the spine area, which reduces pressure on the herniated disk. A brace should be used in conjunction with physical therapy to avoid weakening muscles.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS). TENS units deliver small electric currents to your nerve pathway. These small “shocks” are believed to reduce pain by blocking pain impulses in the body. The TENS unit is most effective when used in conjunction with other therapies.

Talk with your doctor about Pain Medication. In addition to strengthening the muscles, talk with your doctor about pain medications. These medication help reduce pain until the inflammation in the disks is better. Over-the-counter medications include aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen. If your body isn’t responding to these medications, ask about naturopathic pain medications such as Cymbalta or ****. Corticosteroids and muscle relaxants may also provide relieve. In the most severe cases, your doctor may prescribe **** or codeine to relive your pain.
