Avoid Student Credit Card Offers

As soon as you enter college, the student credit card offers start piling in. The credit card companies know that you are young and do not have access to money while away at college. Avoiding these credit card offers can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Never sign up for a credit card to receive their free gift. This is a common tactic for student credit card offers. Most college students only think about the free gift they will receive and not the new line of credit they will be opening.

  2. Step 2

Don't simply throw student credit card offers that you receive in the mail away. Make sure to shred them or burn them. Many identity thieves lurk around colleges because they know that college students simply throw away credit card offers in the trash.

  3. Step 3

Realize that opening a new line of credit will decrease your credit score initially. If you decide to close your account, this will also decrease your credit score. The best way to maintain a healthy credit card score is to have 2 to 3 credit cards and pay the balances off each month.
