Things You'll Need:
- Pineapple
- Containers
- Soil
-
Step 1
In early Spring, you need to purchase your pineapple. When you go to the grocery store pick out a nice large pineapple that is gold on the bottom and green towards the top. Make sure the leaves are large and green, not brown and dry.
-
Step 2
At home, you will need to cut the top off of the pineapple, leaving about 1/4 inch of fruit. Place the top into a plastic bag and leave it for 1 or 2 days.
-
Step 3
Fill your container with potting soil. Bury the bottom part of the pineapple top, leaving the leaves on top of the soil. Tamp the soil firmly. Water the soil once every 7 days, including the leaves. Do not over-water; the soil should feel damp not wet. Overwatering will rot the plant. Monthly fertilizings will keep your plant health and make it grow even faster. Expect your pineapple plant to double in size between Spring and Fall. 10 hours of sunlight per day is ideal for your plant's growth.

Step 4
Depending upon your growing season, your plant will need to be moved indoors once night temperatures reach 50 degrees or colder. Keep the plant near a draft free window or sliding glass door so that it will still be able to take advantage of any available sunlight. The following Spring, move it back into the yard. Typically, it will take 2 to 3 years for your plant to produce it's first fruit.
