Eat Local. Eat Seasonal. This is a huge, huge step in saving money on your food. Try to do all or most of your shopping at your local farmer's market. It will be hard to ween yourself from having bananas available everyday but it will be worth it. Buying produce when its in season is an amazing cooking and eating adventure. It also saves energy, money, and helps support your local food system! The prices will be lower because you are buying produce that hasn't been packaged and shipped. Cut out the middle man, save money!

Waste not. Its great to plan your weekly meals and then shop according to that. But be flexible! If you have more of a certain ingredient than you thought, change up your menu to incorporate that item. Running low on groceries? Don't go shopping until you've used up all of your produce. This way you won't let something go bad in your excitement to use your new produce. Again, this can be another exciting experiment in cooking and eating. Use it all! Think about holding on to scraps for soup broths, too!

Do it yourself. Make your own, make your own, make your own! Love pickles? Find a recipe to use up that fresh produce from the farm. Pickle and jar lots of stuff different produce. Make healthy Harvard Beets. Freeze fresh herbs for the winter. Try making your own jam or preserves. Make your own nut butters or nut milks easily with a food processor. Great for the environment.
